Passing of Ron Schlegel, Founder of Schlegel Villages

September 21, 2026

We are deeply saddened to share that Ron Schlegel, founder of Schlegel Villages, passed away on Saturday, September 19.

We join our members in mourning a visionary leader in seniors’ care, a man who spent his life dedicated to improving the lives of older adults and changing our view of aging.

Ron’s connection to the sector began as a child, when his parents purchased a long-term care home. As an adult, he expanded his parents’ legacy with long-term care and retirement homes across the province and created a new vision for senior living communities and meaningful aging that has been globally recognized.

As both a seniors’ care provider and a researcher, Ron understood the importance of research and generously founded the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging, a research institute that has grown significantly in its reach and impact. His belief that every elder holds wisdom worth sharing also led to the creation of the impactful #ElderWisdom campaign and the Green Bench. For his many efforts and achievements, Ron was recognized as an Officer of the Order of Canada.

We encourage members to read the moving tribute to Ron Schlegel’s life and legacy and obituary, with details on visitation, the funeral service and donations in his memory posted on the Schlegel Villages website.

OLTCA extends our deepest condolences to the Schlegel family and his many friends across the seniors’ living sector.
