This spring, residents at peopleCare Tavistock were recognized by the Ontario Long Term Care Association with a heart recognition award, and it is easy to see why.

The honour celebrates quiet, meaningful leadership that reflects the heart of long-term care and makes a difference for residents, families and colleagues. At peopleCare Tavistock, that spirit showed up in a simple but powerful way.
Through their monthly bingo program, residents decided to pool their winnings and use the funds to help others in Tavistock. Following the resident council’s idea, they bought school snacks, backpacks, and hygiene supplies for the Tavistock Assistance Program (TAP), which helps Tavistock residents access care and support in the event of immediate need or hardship.
It was a small gesture in some ways, but it carried a lot of heart.
The residents wanted to give back to the community they are still very much a part of. That is what makes this story so special. People in long-term care live there because they need 24/7 nursing care, but they are also neighbours, volunteers, friends and community builders. Long-term care is both healthcare and community, and this story is a lovely reminder of that.
At peopleCare Tavistock, residents look for ways to support local programs and people in need whenever they can. Their kindness is genuine. Their leadership is quiet. And their impact is real.
“We love giving back, and we will continue to do it because it’s the right thing to do,” said one resident.
That says it all.
The residents were not doing this for recognition. They saw a need and responded with compassion. In doing so, they showed the kind of generosity and leadership that happens every day in long-term care homes across Ontario.
peopleCare Tavistock’s recognition is a reminder that long-term care homes are an essential part of Ontario’s publicly funded healthcare system. They are also places of purpose, connection and community. At this home, giving back is simply part of who the residents are.
