Life in Long Term Care

Celebrating Ontario’s First LTC Community Engagement Day

A day to remember

On September 13, 2024, long-term care homes across Ontario celebrated their first LTC Community Engagement Day.

Throughout the day, our members welcomed elected officials and local partners to connect with their residents, families and staff. Through these connections, they shared remarkable innovations and transformative opportunities shaping the future of seniors’ care in our communities.

The long-term care sector is in the midst of a major transformation, including the adoption of emotion-focused care and the formation of new partnerships to enhance quality of care. The impact is felt by residents, their families and other caregivers, plus communities and the health system at-large.

Did you know?

1 in 5 seniors over 80 have complex care needs that only can be met by long-term care homes and their 24/7 skilled, multi-disciplinary staff.

Plus more than 45,000 people are waiting for long-term care.

Long-term care has a direct effect on caregivers too. If long-term care homes are enabled to deliver the 58,000 new and redeveloped LTC spaces promised by the government, they could reduce caregiver burden and distress by more than 820,000 hours per week across the province. Additionally, if these caregivers can then return to the job market or increase their hours of work, this could create almost $24 million in income potential per week across the province.

LTC homes create up to $100,000 in savings in the health system per day.  This is for every 100 ALC patients that leave hospital and come to live in LTC. Plus, the quality of life for those who move from hospital to a long-term care home improves significantly.

Long-term care homes are vital members of their communities and economies as a major employer and user of local businesses. In 2024, Ontario’s long-term care homes will contribute over $12 billion to GDP and support nearly 175,000 jobs in local communities. And that’s just the beginning. If enabled to deliver on the government’s new and renewed 58,000 space commitment, long-term care homes could create $37+ billion in GDP and 59,000 new jobs.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of Ontario’s seniors.  The support long-term care homes saw in the Community Engagement Day shows that they’re not alone in this work. They have their communities beside them.
