Life in Long Term Care

A Day of Appreciation at Madison Village

Location: Stoney Creek, Ontario

“It’s the little things that make all the difference,” says Kim, a recreation staff member, as she watches residents take turns at the mini-putt station. Laughter fills the air, blending with the friendly competition and energy of the day. Inside Madison Village, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, even as the summer heat keeps everyone indoors.

On July 16th, Madison Village was alive as staff and residents celebrated an Employee Appreciation Lunch and Resident Camp Day. The day was fueled by the close-knit relationships that have defined the long-term care home for over 50 years.

Madison Village, home to 78 residents, has always been a family-owned facility with strong ties to the community. A new chapter is on the horizon, with a redevelopment plan for a new home starting construction next year. But the excitement for the future doesn’t overshadow the current focus: creating a home where residents and staff feel like family.

“Madison Village is special because of its people,” says Barbara, the Director of Nursing, who has been part of the home for 23 years. “It’s more than just a job. It’s a family. We care for the residents like they’re our own, and that’s why everyone here feels at home.”

The sense of connection between staff and residents was evident throughout the day.

Ljubica, who has worked in housekeeping for nearly 47 years, echoes Barbara’s sentiment, “When you work here for so long, it becomes more than just work. I feel like it’s my house. I like for everything to be clean. It’s where you form real relationships. I love coming in every day; it feels like family.”

This family atmosphere doesn’t just help retain staff, it also fosters an environment where everyone feels motivated to provide the best possible care. “We have a unique connection here,” says Suzanna, a Registered Nurse who has been with the home for over 22 years. “Every day brings something special. Whether it’s helping a resident with their care or sharing a laugh, it’s those little moments that make this place feel like a home.”

The recreation team was especially focused during the event, organizing activities like “Shoot the Clown,” mini-putt, and fishing games. “We want to create fun, engaging moments that make the residents feel active and involved,” says Kim, who has worked in the recreation department for 8 years. “There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing residents smiling, having fun, and creating memories. This is what it’s all about.”

Mariam, the home’s administrator, reflects on the importance of this culture of care, “The family feeling is something we’re committed to, and that starts with treating each other with kindness and respect. That’s why families feel at ease when their loved ones are here. It’s the foundation of the care we provide.”

Madison Village will always be a home where connection, community, and care are at the heart of everything.

The event on July 16th was a reminder of the strong, supportive culture that makes Madison Village more than just a place to live and provide care. It’s a community where staff and residents are truly valued.
