The Ontario government is increasing annual funding to a record $1.92 billion to support the significant increase in staffing in the province’s long-term care homes over the past four years.
This announcement comes as the government achieved a historic milestone – leading the country in providing four hours on average of direct care a day for residents.
Quick facts:
- Compared to 2021, long-term care residents are now receiving, on average, more than an hour of additional daily direct care from nurses and PSWs — a 36 per cent increase, equivalent to 15 days of additional care per resident, per year.
- Four hours of direct care refers to the average amount of hands-on care time provided per resident per day across Ontario. It’s important to remember this is a provincial average, not a fixed amount of care for everyone.
