Gibson family celebrates 50 years of providing long-term care

The Gibson family of Gananoque, owners and operators of Helen Henderson Care Centre in Amherstview and Carveth Care Centre in Gananoque, are celebrating 50 years of providing care. Located in South East Ontario, the centres provide retirement and long-term care to approximately 320 residents.

The family business started as an act of compassion for the elderly by Kingsley and Joyce Gibson. Working together, they opened an 18-bed retirement/long-term care home in Seeley’s Bay to accommodate patients at Kingston Psychiatric Hospital who were destined for relocation. Joyce Gibson, a registered nurse at the hospital, did not want her patients separated. Determined to keep the ward together, Joyce and Kingsley received approval to move the patients to an unused hotel in Seeley’s Bay which they renovated and renamed Rideau Haven.

Over time, that act of compassion for the elderly became a labour of love for three generations of Gibsons. To mark their business milestone, the family is hosting a 50th Anniversary Celebration and Family Fun Day in their communities. To learn more, visit
