Chartwell Gibson provides a taste of home for one lucky resident through its "Moments that Matter" campaign
Comfort food is delicious, uplifting and a positive and nostalgic experience for most of us. Blanche—a resident at Chartwell Gibson Long Term Care in North York, Ontario—couldn’t agree more. For her, there’s nothing like a home cooked meal, which is why she wanted nothing more than to enjoy a delicious lunch consisting of food from her homeland.
“I was born in
India,” explains Blanche. “It was where I was married and had all three of my children. One thing I really miss about back home is traditional Indian food. I don’t get to enjoy it very often, and I love it.”
Taking this into account, Chartwell Gibson LTC staff decided that Blanche deserved a special lunch for herself and some of her friends—courtesy of our Moments That Matter program. They arranged for her to meet with Food Service Supervisor Parminder to discuss what she would like to have on the menu for her special day. After Blanche decided on vegetarian masala, dal makhani, naan, samosas and Indian-style rice, Parminder got on the phone with Mistaan Catering and Sweets Inc. to discuss Blanche’s lunch request.
Authentic food wasn’t all that was served up for Blanche’s luncheon, however. Chartwell Gibson LTC staff also arranged for Blanche and her guests to receive bangles as gifts for attending. Better still, the residence’s very own Dietician, Farqunda, arranged for her daughter to attend the "Moment" and provide Blanche and her guests with traditional Henna art. If that wasn’t enough, the home also invited several Bollywood-style dancers to entertain guests during the festivities.
Blanche’s lunch took place in the recreation room of Chartwell Gibson LTC, which was beautifully decorated with fresh flowers and bright colours reminiscent of her Indian culture. Surrounded by friends and the aroma of delicious food, Blanche expressed how wonderful it was to have her moment fulfilled.
“I feel so special today and couldn’t have asked for more. I’m so grateful. It feels like it must be my birthday!”
Blanche’s special luncheon is just one example of how Chartwell staff go above and beyond to make the lives of their residents better. To learn more about Chartwell’s Moments that Matter program,
