Recognizing a dedicated partner in long-term care
Hamilton’s Shalom Village shows its gratitude to Classic Care Pharmacy
The drive to enhance care and life quality for an aging population is a team effort. In recognition of this, staff at Shalom Village in Hamilton nominated corporate partner Classic Care Pharmacy for an award celebrating excellence in geriatric service and care.

Every year, Service Awards for Geriatric Excellence (SAGE) are presented to outstanding organizations and individuals serving the seniors population. Shalom thought of Classic Care, for the team award.

Classic Care pharmacists are in Shalom Village every day to help ensure accurate medication provision. Another consulting pharmacist assesses individual residents’ needs and advises nursing staff and physicians when necessary.

Shalom Village executive coach Michelle Draper nominated Classic Care Pharmacy for the award for many reasons. She says the pharmacists working with staff and residents are “without a doubt, considered Shalom Village team members.”

Ongoing education is a major component of Classic Care Pharmacy’s work, says Draper, and the annual nursing conference and numerous other educational events, each sponsored by Classic Care Pharmacy, “ensures that long-term care remains at the forefront of health-care issues in the province of Ontario.”

The organization was one of eight nominees for the SAGE team award, and though it was presented to another nominee at a ceremony in late May, staff members at Shalom Village nonetheless want to recognize the partnership they enjoy with Classic Care Pharmacy.

“Without a doubt Classic Care Pharmacy has an incredible impact on our team with a direct link to the quality of our residents’ lives,” writes Shalom Village executive coach Sally Rakas in a letter of support for the nomination.

Registered nurse Bernice Faulkner manages the convalescent care program (CCP) at Shalom Village, where people recovering from illness are supported at the home while regaining their strength.

She says a major component of the program is ensuring that CCP residents understand their medical condition and how their medications work, and “Classic Care Pharmacy is an essential part of what makes our Convalescent Care Program a success.”

Draper’s original nomination sums up the relationship.

“Shalom Village is proud to partner with Classic Care Pharmacy and we strongly believe that they are role models of best practice and very deserving of the recognition,” she writes.
