Smitherman to lead Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty announced Oct. 30 that George Smitherman will resume his role as Minister of Health and Long-Term Care.

Smitherman, the MPP for Toronto Centre – Rosedale, has also been named deputy premier, a position he has held since 2003.

During the election campaign, the Ontario Liberal’s health platform focused on making the province healthier by increasing access to better care, reducing wait times and promoting wellness to prevent illness.

According to Smitherman’s biography on McGuinty’s website, Smitherman is the longest-serving Ontario Health Minister in the last quarter century. He has led a number of government initiatives in recent years including the effort to reduce wait times and enhance access to nurses and doctors.
