Meadow Park Nursing Home residents reminisce over old cars

When he laid his eyes on the 1915 Grey Dort car, the senior was moved to tears.
Not only was the car made in the year he was born, but was also built in Chatham where he lives.
A recent vintage car show held at Meadow Park Nursing Home in Chatham was a popular event that rekindled fond reminiscences for residents, says Joanne Jones, an activity director at the 99-bed home.
“It evoked a lot of memories for them,” says Jones about the show held in early July.
She says the 1915 Grey Dort was a hit with most of the residents but particularly the man in his nineties. “He remembered seeing it on the road,” she explains.
On display in the nursing home’s parking lot were 16 cars ranging from the locally-made Grey Dort to a 1967 cherry red Camaro.
Jones says she was inspired to arrange the car show event after seeing how much residents enjoy visiting one on an outing last year. At that particular show, she asked the vintage car owners if they could bring their cars by the nursing home so residents who couldn’t attend the previous outing could take part.
This is the second year Meadow Park has held the show. Running in conjunction with the show was a family barbecue and fundraiser which generated about $100 for the local branch of the Canadian Cancer Society.
