Simple
programs often best, says Temiskaming administrator
Monday, October 2, 2006 -- Craig Anderson
Sometimes when it comes to activity programming, it’s useful
to “think inside the box.”
This was the approach of volunteers and staff at Temiskaming Lodge
when they held a summer-closing Corn Roast on August 31st.
Drawing forty residents and twenty family members, the event was a
throw-back to simple summer gatherings, says Francine Gosselin, acting
administrator and director of care.
Activity programmers, she says, forget about these simple gatherings
in their quest to provide unique and unprecedented events.
“It made the residents reminisce and they truly enjoyed that,”
says Gosselin.
This sentiment was echoed by Kathy Ruddy, activity director, who penned
a short article in the home’s monthly newspaper, the “Temiskaming
Lodge Flyer.”
Ruddy explains that holding an activity as simple as a corn roast
had never occurred to her during her 23 year tenure as an activity
director.
“Temiskaming Lodge has always looked for new activities for
residents’ enjoyment. Sometimes the simplest activity produces
the greatest hit,” writes Ruddy.
“Thinking outside of the box is great but sometimes looking
around in the box can also provide you with a great activity.”
Local volunteers assisted at the event, and the home’s restorative
care coordinator, Khristina Robinson, was joined by her family, who
helped roast scores and scores of corn ears. The event was held outside,
centred around the home’s gazebo.
Temiskaming Lodge, a 80-bed home run by long term care provider Jarlette
(see: www.jarlette.com), is located in Northeastern Ontario on the
shores of Lake Temiskaming in the “Tri-town” area that
includes Cobalt, Haileybury, and New Liskeard.
Situated in such a small community (the surrounding area is home to
14,000 people), says Gosselin, the home enjoys strong local support.
This support, she explains, can be seen in well-attended events.
“[The relationship] is very positive,” she says. “We
have good ties with the community.”
