Secret Santa to visit Caressant Care McLaughlin

When Caressant Care McLaughlin residents are sleeping on Christmas Eve, a Secret Santa will enter their rooms with a sack full of presents.

From socks and blankets to oil painting or rug hooking kits, each of the home’s 96 residents receive a gift from staff to open on Christmas morning. The initiative was started last year by the 130 employees at the Lindsay long-term care home.

“It just makes it a little more special to wake up and see that gift sitting there,” says Pat Haringa, activity director at Caressant Care McLaughlin.

Gift-givers either know the residents well or make an effort to find out what they would enjoy receiving for Christmas, says Pat. Staff and students in the home’s various departments take part. A list containing the residents’ names is posted and employees sign their names beside the resident for whom they’re buying the gift. “Everybody gets involved,” says Pat. “So that’s really special.”

She says residents were delighted by last year’s gesture and tried to guess who their Secret Santa was.

“Some residents don’t have any family,” says Pat. “Some of them don’t get out.” Others receive their gifts before or after Christmas but have nothing to open Dec. 25.

Pat collects the gifts in her office for distribution on the floors on Christmas Eve. An employee working nights dresses as Santa Claus and delivers the gifts.

Last year residents expressed their appreciation for the secret Santa initiative with a tea in January.
