Yee Hong uses government funding to hire staff, educator

The Yee Hong Centre for Geriatric Care is hiring an educator and increasing the number of health care aides and activation staff with new funding from the provincial government.

Angelina Yau, executive director of Yee Hong’s Scarborough McNicoll, says the funding will impact care provided at the long-term care provider’s four homes in the Toronto area. The Yee Hong Centre McNicoll will receive $339,450, according to a document from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. Yau says McNicoll has received some of that funding.

“We definitely will increase staffing,” says Yau.

The Liberal government has announced an injection of $191 million into long-term care to hire 600 more nurses and 1,400 new front-line staff, such as personal support workers, dieticians, activity co-ordinators and therapists.

At Scarborough McNicoll, Yee Hong’s 55-bed facility, Yau is hiring the equivalent of three full-time health care aides, a part-time staff member in the activation department and a full-time educator to serve all of Yee Hong’s facilities. The educator will keep staff informed about the new government standards and share information about geriatric care, pain management and palliative care, for example.

“We feel it’s very important to have up-to-date knowledge and skills for staff. Education is a big component. We have to upkeep staff knowledge and skill.”

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has set new standards in a variety of areas, including facilities provide residents with two baths a week and have at least one registered nurse on all shifts. The money is intended to make it possible for facilities to meet the new care standards set out by the government as part of an overhaul of the long-term care sector.

Yau says the objective of the Yee Hong Centre and its board of directors is to be a leader when it comes to the level of service provided. The centre’s foundation, the Yee Hong Community Wellness Foundation, shares the same vision and assists the centre by providing additional funding. “Our philosophy (is) we should provide a high level of services.”
