Santa visits Collingwood many times a year

Residents at a Collingwood nursing home have a Santa Claus of sorts, one who asks what’s on their wish lists several times a year.

Residents can belt out a tune with the accompaniment of a karaoke machine and tickle the keys of an electronic piano, thanks to the special fund for residents’ wishes at Collingwood Nursing Home.

The Resident Wish List Committee, made up of three staff members at the home, has been meeting special requests for residents for the past few years. Robert Zober, treasurer, says the residents’ wish list was a staff initiative that has taken off at the 60-resident home in a rural area of Collingwood near Blue Mountain.

“There were some issues in regards to our (Collingwood Nursing Home) Volunteer Auxiliary,” explains Zober.

“There was kind of a blind spot in meeting residents’ needs.” In response, three staff members united to form the Residents’ Wish List Committee.

“We took it to heart,” says Zober, a member of the committee which falls under the volunteer auxiliary but is run autonomously. The committee approached the home’s residents’ council to determine what was on residents’ wish lists. The committee also makes suggestions. “They determine what it is they would like.”

The committee began planning for silent auctions, 50-50 draws and muffin and coffee days to raise money for desired items, including a karaoke machine and new electronic piano. The annual auction, held near Christmas time, is a particular success, notes Zober. Suppliers donate gifts from gold chains to sweaters while family members and residents knit items or contribute pottery.

“We tout it as an alternative for people to go Christmas shopping,” says Zober.

Last year the auction raised more than $1,800. Combined, events each year bring in between $3,000 and $5,000. It is has helped towards the purchase of the piano, a karaoke machine and CDs, nature videos, backyard rejuvenation and art for the dining room.

While the wish list clearly is a benefit to residents, it’s good for staff as well, notes Zober. “It really raises the morale,” says Zober, adding staff, along with residents, takes part in the events. “It helps to enhance and beautify the home in general. Overall, we’re tying to raise the quality of life for residents.”
