Orchard Terrace Care Centre's biography project unites generations

Orchard Terrace Care Centre, a Responsive Management Inc. long-term care home located in Stoney Creek, united generations by inviting 25 Grade 5 and 6 students into their home to write biographies of 20 residents.

The enthusiastic students began interviewing and writing resident biographies, but it was evident early on that this was blossoming into more than just a school project when the two generations began bonding and participating as friends in social events, games, and garden strolls. Residents looked forward to the quality one-on-one time they spent together with their pals eating ice cream, playing “go fish,” or just chatting about life. One student commented he looked forward to his visits, loves playing checkers with his new friend while learning about hockey and the Hamilton Tiger Cats, and planned to be back after the biography project ended.

After a few months, the students had to say farewell to begin new school projects, but they attended a goodbye social event hosted by Orchard’s team members where they presented residents with thank you cards, artwork they made in class, gifts they felt the residents would like, and, a heartfelt biography that highlighted memorable events in residents’ lives as a reminder of friendship and personal accomplishment.

The home would like to say a special thank you to all the participating students of John Knox Christian School who made difference in resident’s lives and made every moment matter.
